What is Ozone?
Ozone is a form of oxygen, a component of our air. Ozone molecules contain three, rather than the normal two atoms of oxygen per molecule, and are formed by the action of electric discharge or ultra-violet light. Ozone occurs naturally in the atmosphere, for example after a thunderstorm, and is recognisable by its peculiarly pungent smell. It is also present in the upper atmosphere, protecting us against harmful ultraviolet rays in direct sunlight.
What is Ozone used for?
It has been known for many years that ozone has powerful sterilising properties, and that it kills bacteria, viruses and fungi within seconds. Ozone can be used to purify drinking water, to control infections and smells in hospitals, and to disinfect wounds.
How can Ozone be used in Dentistry?
The area is first of all carefully cleaned and may be assessed using a special laser called a DIAGNODENT. Then, using a special machine, called the HEALOZONE machine, ozone is generated and applied directly to the tooth to be treated in a controlled manner. The bacteria which have been producing the acid and causing the problem, are completely wiped out as the ozone floods the tooth. The damaging process stops instantly. Once this has been done, the area is washed with a special mineral-rich fluid which provides it with the minerals necessary to heal and harden the tooth again. Over the next three months a special toothpaste and mouthwash are used to keep up high levels of mineral to allow the healing process to continue.
Exactly how Ozone will be used in each situation will depend on the circumstances: If the decay is in very early stages, the process described above is all that is needed. If the decay has progressed a little further, and spread to the dentine inside the tooth, the grooves in the biting surface of the tooth are gently cleaned out to uncover the decay. Following treatment with Healozone the area is sealed with special high-fluoride sealer. After 3-6 months the sealer is removed, ozone applied again, and, if the soft dentine has hardened, a permanent, invisible sealer applied.
